“Everyone you meet always asks if you have a career, are married, or owns a house as if it’s some kind of grocery list. But no one asks are you happy.”
I read the above quote a few days and it got me thinking a lot. We live in a society where we equate having certain things means happiness. Being in a relationship but nothing about it brings you joy. Having a good paying job but the thought of getting up and going makes you sick. And various other things. It makes you wonder why we put ourselves in positions that don’t bring us happiness. Why does the surface mean so much? I’ve been guilty of letting my happiness take a back seat just to show the outside that life is great. It makes you feel stuck, depressed and anything else that doesn’t make the soul feel good.
I have come to the conclusion that happiness matters. What others think does not matter. Making my soul glow matters. And over the years I have tried to make a conscious effort to not feel stuck. Is it always successful, heck no, but it doesn’t stop me. I just try and come at it a different way.
Happiness will be different for everyone and that’s the amazing things about us humans because we are all different. Internal check ins are important. Take inventory of your life. What does not feel right? What makes you feel stuck? And once you figure that out sit and do the work to find ways to move your life forward. It doesn’t have to be a drastic change. Maybe it’s something small that keeps progressing towards happiness. Looking within is hard , which is oftentimes why we avoid and stay in situations that don’t bring us any sense of peace. We must take care of ourselves.
I encourage you to take a look within and ask yourself, are you happy?
